THE CHAIRMAN of Otukpo LGA of Benue State, Prince Maxwell Ogiri, has condemned the recent attacks on Okpomaju, Ododaje, and Asa 2 communities by suspected herdsmen, which have resulted in the loss of lives, injuries, and displacement of residents.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ogiri described the attacks as “deeply distressing” and extended his condolences to the bereaved families while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. He assured affected residents of the government’s commitment to restoring peace and enabling displaced persons to return home safely.
The chairman disclosed that his administration is engaging with key stakeholders, including the Otukpo Traditional Council, the leadership of the Fulani community, and security agencies, to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
While acknowledging the frustration of the people, he urged residents to avoid reprisal attacks, emphasising that violence would only worsen the situation.
“I deeply appreciate the efforts of the Och’Otukpo Odu, His Royal Majesty Dr. John Eimonye OON JP, as well as our security agencies, in de-escalating tensions and restoring peace,” Ogiri stated.
He further reassured the people of Otukpo that the government is intensifying security efforts, strengthening surveillance, and taking proactive measures to prevent future attacks. He called for unity, vigilance, and peaceful coexistence between all residents, including both indigenes and settlers.
“While we remain committed to working with all stakeholders to strengthen security, protect our communities, and create an environment where all people can coexist peacefully, the safety and well-being of our people remain our top priority,” Ogiri added.
The chairman urged residents to remain calm and committed to peace while the government continues to work towards lasting security solutions for the affected communities.
