THE OGUN State Government has confirmed that the two people who died in a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday were foreign nationals.
The crash occurred at about 11:00 a.m. near the Sinoma area, before Danco, along the busy expressway. Multiple vehicles were involved in the accident, which attracted public attention due to the presence of a high-profile individual in one of the cars.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, disclosed that preliminary findings indicated the deceased were adult male foreign nationals who died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
According to the state government, the accident happened when a Lexus SUV travelling from Lagos to Sagamu rammed into a stationary vehicle along the highway, resulting in a fatal impact that claimed two lives and left others injured.
The vehicle was conveying former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, who sustained injuries in the crash alongside his driver. Both were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Expressing the state government’s condolences, Akinmade described the incident as a devastating loss and extended sympathy to the families of the victims.
“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. We pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of those injured,” the statement said.
The Ogun State Government also urged motorists to exercise greater caution on major highways, particularly along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, noting that crashes involving stationary vehicles continue to pose serious safety risks on the route.
