… As FCT Basic Education Board calls for Nigerians supports

By Ade Ezekiel

THE DIRECTOR of Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Federal Capital Territory Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs Florence Wenegemi, has emphasized the need for well-meaning Nigerians to support the government’s efforts in education sector by investing in infrastructures and bridging the learning gaps.

She made the call in Abuja while inaugurating an N8 million worth Science Laboratory project initiated and donated by a National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) member, Marvelous Otarigho to the Government Junior Secondary School, Life Camp, Abuja, to commemorate this year’s Nelson Mandela Day.

Mrs Wenegemi described the project as a “timely intervention” that would significantly impact students’ academic development. “This is a laudable project because the government cannot do it alone. Together, we can achieve more. For Marvelous, a youth corps member, to have initiated and completed this project we are very proud of her,” Mrs Wenegemi added.

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Marvelous Otarigho, sponsored and constructed the fully equipped science laboratory, worth N8 million, at the Government Junior Secondary School, Life Camp, Abuja.

Otarigho said the project was part of her Community Development Service (CDS) programme, aimed at transforming science education and enhancing students’ practical learning experiences.

She further explained that the project was also carried out to commemorate this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day, an occasion designated by the United Nations to inspire individuals globally to drive positive change within their communities.

“Basic Science was a very difficult subject for my students, that is what I observed. I started training them by showing pictures online and conducting simple classroom experiments. I soon realised how genuinely interested they were. That’s what motivated me to establish this laboratory, so they can actually practise what they are taught, rather than just imagine it,” she said.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the school, the Principal, Mr Nwachukwu Francis, expressed delight at the corps member’s dedication, vision, and positive contribution to the school community.

The event which was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from NGOs, school leaders, community figures, and education stakeholders, lauded the project as a remarkable and youth-driven impact in the education sector.
