THE MANAGING Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, has called on employers across the country to enroll in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) to ensure more families benefit from its critical safety net.
Faleye made the appeal on Wednesday during the presentation of a cheque worth N18,652,908.20 as death benefits to the family of an employee who died in the line of duty.
He emphasized the need for employers to fulfill their obligations under the scheme while highlighting the vital roles of stakeholders — employers and employees — in its success.
Represented by the Executive Director of Operations, Hon. Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, the NSITF boss stated that the cheque presentation underscores the importance of employers’ contributions in safeguarding their workers and their dependents.
He noted that responsible employers who prioritize employee welfare are key stakeholders in the ECS’s effectiveness.
Faleye outlined ways stakeholders can support the scheme, including promoting better workplace safety practices among employees; minimizing the risk of work-related injuries and diseases as much as possible, despite the ECS being a no-fault scheme; proactively reporting workplace injuries or illnesses within stipulated timelines to avoid penalties; assisting the Fund in raising awareness about the ECS’s benefits among other stakeholders, and reassigning injured or disabled employees to more suitable roles within their organizations.
The NSITF Managing Director commended the deceased’s employer, the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, for its strong partnership with the Fund, noting that both organizations remain committed to upholding the principles of the ECS as enshrined in the Employees’ Compensation Act (ECA) of 2010.
He also praised the dedication of NSITF staff and stakeholders, whose efforts ensure the Fund’s services remain efficient, transparent, and accessible to employers and employees in both the public and private sectors.
In his remarks, Faleye said: “It is with great humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today on behalf of NSITF to present this cheque to one of our esteemed beneficiaries.
“Today’s event is not just a routine exercise — it reaffirms our commitment to the core values of social protection, compassion, and service. As a Social Insurance Institution, our mandate is to ensure that no employee covered by the scheme is left vulnerable in times of need.
“Whether it is the unfortunate loss of a loved one, a workplace injury, or a disability, our goal is to provide timely and dignified support to affected individuals and families.
“Today, we fulfill that promise. This cheque represents more than financial assistance — it is a token of solidarity, a demonstration of care, and a symbol of our collective responsibility as a society to look after one another.”
The deceased, an employee of Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident while returning from work.
