BENUE State epidemiologist, Dr Henry Ijabo, has called on people of the state to stop open defecation and cultivate the habit of always washing their hands to prevent cholera as there is currently no vaccine for the disease which according to him is not included in routine immunisation programmes.
Dr Ijabo, who gave the caution while speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Makurdi, Benue State capital, said three persons have been confirmed to have died of complications resulting from cholera in the state.
According to him, the three persons died in the last two weeks, adding that out of the 13 cases reported since the cholera outbreak so far, 10 are under close observation.

While he urged the people not to panic, Ijabo advised them to maintain high level of hygiene in their environments to help curb the disease from spreading further.
He observed that communities in the Benue South senatorial district have often been the most hit anytime there is cholera outbreak in the state in the last 10 years.
“The disease is most prevalent in the Agatu, Ado, and Otukpo local government areas in the Benue South senatorial zone and not all of the state as of now”, Ijabo said
