THE National Women Commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) last Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at the end of its 5th National Gender Conference inaugurated Comrade Salamatu Aliu of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) as its new National Chairperson. Comrade Aliu succeeds Comrade Mercy Okazie, who concluded her second tenure this year.
Also inaugurated along with Comrade Salamatu at the conference were a Deputy National Chairperson, six Vice National Chairpersons and three Ex-Officio members.
The process, which was conducted under a consensus arrangement saw emerged as Deputy National Chairperson, Comrade Deborah Yusuf of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) while the six Vice National Chairpersons, include Comrades Mairo Umar of NCSU), Adedamola Salami of NURTW, Funmi Fasan of Maritime Union, Cecilia Ita, Pauline Gaku of NUEE and Jamila Yusuf of NULGE.
The three Ex-Officio members are Comrades Helen Usen of RATTAWU, Lucy Ukpen of NUATE and Hauwa Abdullahi of NUP.
The President or Chairperson, as the position is often called, and the other elected officials, are to serve for four years in the first instance and renewable for another term of four years.
The chairperson of the NLC Women Commission is automatically a member of NLC’s National Administrative Council where she will serve as Vice President.
