THE PRESIDENT of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been invited to be a member of the IEA Clean Energy Labour Council.
In a letter of invitation to Comrade Ajaero, the Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA), said the IEA Clean Energy Labour Council was convened three years ago aimed at “supporting a people-centred and inclusive clean energy transition”.
“It is with great pleasure that I invite you to become a member of the IEA Clean Energy Labour Council.
“Convened three years ago in the aim of supporting a people-centred and inclusive clean energy transitions, the Council is co-chaired by Mr Luc Triangle, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and Ms. Zingiswa Losi, President of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. The platform has been designed to foster dialogue between the IEA, its stakeholders and the labour sector, a key and central voice in people-centred and just transitions.
“I am certain that your membership in the Council would greatly enhance the impact of this platform, allowing the voice of labour to be heard in energy and climate policymaking more strongly than ever,” Dr. Birol said in the letter dated February 14, 2025.
Birol added: “The nature of the engagement involves joining meetings with other Council members two to four times annually. you may occasionally be consulted to provide input on key strategic documents or be invited to participate in high-level international events shaping the future of clean energy transitions.
“The next meeting of the Council will take place virtually on 21 March 2025 from 14:30 to 16:30 (CET).”
NLC spokesperson, Comrade Benson Upah, confirmed to National Record Monday evening via phone that Comrade Ajaero has since accepted the invitation to serve in the council on behalf of Nigerian workers.
