THE RECENT denial by students of the School of Nursing in Agbor, Delta State, of Mrs. Oluremi Tinibu’s “mama-ship” is a stark reflection of the economic desperation gripping the nation.
The president’s policies have pushed students and their families to the brink, leaving many to struggle on meagre resources. Students are forced to survive on a single meal a day. They struggle through school without the requisite academic materials and funding. Some are on the verge of withdrawing from school to find work and make ends meet. The economic strain is palpable, with tempers frayed and no respite in sight. The denial was the least students in that situation could do.
Our political leadership has devolved into a cabal, where the ruling elite reap benefits while the masses suffer. Governance has become a tool for personal enrichment, leaving the majority to grapple with excruciating economic hardship
Throughout history, numerous women have left indelible marks, earning the admiration and respect of generations. Some notable examples include Malala Yousafzai, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frida Kahlo, just to mention a few. These women are known for their courage, activism, and contributions to society. In fact, as First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt was a powerful advocate for human rights and social justice, leaving a legacy of compassion and activism.
The students’ rejection of Mrs. Tinibu’s ‘mama-ship’ is a desperate cry against the president’s misguided policies, which have plunged them into economic despair.

The first lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, might not be surprised by the students’ reaction, considering her alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University, was once a hotbed of student activism. During her time, radicalism was the norm, even when Nigeria’s economic situation was more stable.
However, the current climate has changed dramatically. Voices that once spoke out against governance have been silenced, and protests are now a rare occurrence. The democratic regime, led by self-proclaimed democratic progressives, has created an environment where dissent is discouraged. Students and citizens are no longer freely expressing their opinions, marking a significant departure from the activism of the Second Republic and military eras.
When children deny their mama, it means that mama has not mummied them very well. Mothers and children share a unique connection, one that’s rooted in mutual understanding and empathy.
A mother knows her child intimately, and the child knows his/her mother just as well. This bond is forged through countless moments of sacrifice, care, and nurturing. A mother’s love is selfless and unwavering, and children instinctively respond to this love with loyalty and devotion. What kind of mother will be in a house where the rules, laws and policies of her husband and father of her children, muzzle the destiny of her children without doing something to help?

When a mother has been sacrificial and loving, her child will not deny her in public. In fact, the child will proudly claim their mother and celebrate her love and care. However, when the mother-child bond is weakened or neglected, children may begin to distance themselves from their mothers.
In a world where men often dominate, countless women have made history and stood out as true amazons. Being the wife of a president doesn’t automatically grant someone the title of “mama” of the nation. We need to foster a society where individuals earn their recognition through hard work and dedication.

It’s time to move away from a “Red Cross approach” to governance, where temporary fixes and handouts are prioritized over sustainable solutions. We need a more nuanced and effective approach that addresses the root causes of problems and empowers individuals to thrive.
The Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme of the First Lady which is currently distributing 10,000 Professional Kits (Crocs and Scrubs) to midwives in each geopolitical zone of Nigeria is only making a mockery of the dire situation in the health sector.
