THE CHIEF of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has assured Nigerians that the military and other security agencies remain firmly in control of security operations in the North East, despite recent resurgence of insurgent activities in the region.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Maiduguri, Gen. Musa urged citizens not to panic over sporadic attacks, emphasizing that security forces are effectively managing the situation.
“The pockets of attacks should not be a cause for concern as the military and security agencies are firmly in control,” he stated.
The CDS disclosed that he had visited Borno State three weeks ago alongside the Ministers of Defence and other service chiefs to evaluate the security situation.
He returned for a reassessment following renewed attacks and to engage stakeholders on strategies for improved security.
“Security is not a one-man business. I appeal to everyone to join the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, and all forms of criminality for the peace and development of our country,” Musa said.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensuring lasting peace and development across Nigeria.
Regional Security Dynamics:
The defence chief attributed the recent surge in attacks to pressure on terrorists in the Sahel, forcing them towards Nigeria’s porous borders around the Lake Chad Basin.
“We are working diligently to address these challenges,” he assured.
International Collaboration and New Strategies:
Musa also mentioned Nigeria’s non-aligned diplomatic stance while engaging international partners willing to support the counter-terrorism efforts.
“We have procured more sophisticated weapons, which will soon be deployed alongside new strategies to end terrorism,” he revealed.
Assessment and Stakeholder Engagement:
During his visit, the CDS inspected Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, where an armoury explosion occurred recently due to extreme heat.
He also held meetings with key stakeholders and senior military officials from Operation Hadin Kai at the 7 Division, Maimalari Cantonment.
The CDS’s reassurances come amid heightened concerns over insurgent activities, with the military pledging intensified efforts to restore stability in the region. (NAN)
