A NIGERIAN author and a publisher, Dr Mohammed Abubakar, has called for the implementation of compulsory military service for youths to address the country’s security challenges.
The author of Serving the Nation: Exploring Mandatory Military Service for Nigerian Youths, made this call at the book’s presentation in Abuja on Monday.
Abubakar emphasised that mandatory military service can instil patriotism, discipline, and defence readiness in Nigerian youths.
He cited countries like Finland, Israel, South Korea, and Singapore, which have successfully implemented mandatory military service.
According to Abubakar, a survey revealed that 73.1 per cent of Nigerians believe mandatory military service is necessary for youths.
“The survey also showed that 79.7 per cent believe it will address security challenges facing the country.”
Abubakar expressed confidence in the leadership of the Nigerian Army, particularly in the Chief of Army Staff Lt.- Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, and Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa.
He emphasised the need for good governance, increased military personnel, and technology to tackle insecurity in Nigeria.
Also speaking, Dr AK Peters, an academic said that Nigeria could learn from countries listed on the implementation of mandatory military service to address the country’s security challenges.
According to Peters, countries like Finland, South Korea, and Israel have successfully implemented mandatory military service, which has contributed to their national security and development.
“In Finland, conscription is a cornerstone of national defense, with service lasting 165-347 days, depending on the role.
“In South Korea, mandatory service is deeply embedded in society, with service lasting 18-21 months, and is seen as a rite of passage into responsible adulthood.
“In Israel, military service is central to national identity, with men serving 30-36 months and women serving 24 months,” he said.
Peters emphasised that Nigeria can adapt these models to address its security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts.
He suggested that mandatory military service could foster national unity, youth empowerment, and civic responsibility in Nigeria.
The scholar also emphasised the need for transparent administration, adequate funding, and fair enforcement of mandatory military service in Nigeria.
