THE MEDIA office of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has condemned Monday evening’s attack in Birnin Kebbi on the former minister’s convoy.
The incident occurred near Malami’s private residence following a condolence visit to the Emir of Gwandu.
Malami’s media consultant, Lily Grace, in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirmed that the attack resulted in more than 25 individuals sustaining injuries, with at least five in serious condition. Several vehicles were also reportedly vandalised.
While condemning the incident, the media office described it as “a brazen assault on peace, democracy, and the constitutional right of every citizen to move freely.”
She stated that such acts would not deter Malami’s commitment to justice and democratic accountability. She also noted that this was the second reported attack on Malami or his family since his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and subsequent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on July 2.
The statement emphasised Malami’s condemnation of political violence and his commitment to serving the people of Kebbi State and Nigeria through peaceful and lawful means.
Grace called on President Bola Tinubu and national security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
In response to the event, the Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Commissioner of Police Bello Sani stated that while no arrests have been made, an emergency security meeting was convened by the state governor to review the situation.
CP Sani indicated that the violence, which occurred in the GRA area involved members of political parties allegedly breaching campaign regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that party leaders would be summoned and cautioned to avoid further violations, with security agencies working to prevent any escalation ahead of the 2025 elections.
Abubakar Malami served as the Attorney-General of the Federation from 2015 to 2023 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
