THE LAGOS Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), says it is committed to improving the remuneration and welfare of street workers in the state.
The Director, Public Affairs, LAWMA, Mrs Folashade Kadiri, made the pledge in a statement, on Thursday in Lagos.
Kadiri said that LAWMA had implemented several initiatives to enhance the sweepers’ safety, well-being; and efficiency; through regular health and safety training, to ensure best practices in their daily operations.
She said that the authority had engaged in the reclassification of sweeping routes, toward prioritising worker safety and security.
According to her, LAWMA initiated accident and emergency insurance coverage, to provide medical support for sweepers, in case of work-related incidents.
She said that the authority ensured the provision of uniforms and necessary work implements, to ensure dignity and efficiency in their duties.
Kadiri said that the Lagos State Street Sweeping Programme, supervised by LAWMA, played a vital role in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
She said that the authority oversaw the programme, ensuring that sweeping operations ran efficiently and that workers received fair remuneration and adequate support.
The director said that street sweepers were engaged through private companies under structured contracts, with their responsibilities and entitlements clearly defined.
“These private companies are responsible for directly paying their engaged sweepers.
“Following a recent wage review, sweeper salaries have been adjusted to align with the national minimum wage and are proportionate to their work schedule, which consists of four-hour daily shifts.
“Under this structure, sweepers earn ₦40,000 per month while Supervisors earn ₦50,000 per month.
“This arrangement provides workers with financial stability, while allowing flexibility for other economic activities outside their assigned shifts,” she said.
Kadiri said that LAWMA took the concerns of street sweepers seriously and remained committed to ensuring that they received fair treatment, in line with agreed standards.
She said that any reports of salary discrepancies or contractual violations were promptly investigated and corrective measures were enforced, where necessary.
Kadiri said that the success of the street sweeping programme relied on their dedication, and LAWMA would continue to uphold policies that ensured their welfare, while enhancing service delivery for a cleaner Lagos. (NAN)
