IN A DECISIVE move to bolster media rights and journalist safety in Nigeria, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria will commission a new headquarters and Press Freedom Hub in Abuja on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, as part of global observances marking World Press Freedom Day.

Musikilu Mojeed
Mojeed, IPI Nigeria President.

A press statement by Ahmed I. Shekarau, IPI Nigeria’s Secretary, revealed that the Press Freedom Hub is situated along Kado Expressway in the nation’s capital.

The facility, Shakarau stated, is set to become IPI Nigeria’s primary operational base for defending press freedom and shielding journalists and media professionals from threats, censorship, and physical danger.

Speaking ahead of the commissioning, the statement quoted IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, as describing the hub as a strategic anchor for the organisation’s media advocacy programmes.

“The centre will anchor our media advocacy programmes and accelerate efforts to promote press freedom and protect journalists facing threats and censorship,” Mojeed said.

He added that the hub would also serve as a venue for periodic reviews of media freedom and journalist safety, drive policy and legal reforms to strengthen independent journalism, and foster essential dialogue between the media and government.

IPI Nigeria is a national affiliate of IPI Global, a worldwide network of editors, media executives, and leading journalists spanning more than 100 countries.

Founded in 1950, the parent organisation has championed the cause of press freedom for over seven decades.

Registered under Nigerian law, IPI Nigeria was established in the 1970s by a generation of towering media figures, including the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the late Alhaji Ismaila Isa Funtua, Chief Segun Osoba, the late Malam Wada Maida, and Chief Sam Amuka-Pemu.

Since its inception, the Nigerian chapter has remained at the forefront of advancing press freedom, strengthening independent journalism, and promoting the safety of journalists across the country.

With the new Press Freedom Hub, IPI Nigeria signals a renewed commitment to defending democratic expression and protecting those who bear witness to power.
