…Seeks Alliance With GOCOP To Boost Media Literacy
THE MINISTER of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has hailed the election of Mr. Danlami Nmodu as the new President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), describing him as “a thorough journalist” and immediately seeking an alliance with the guild to boost media literacy nationwide.
In a press statement signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, Idris drew from his long-standing personal and professional relationship with Nmodu, the publisher of Newsdiaryonline, to endorse his capabilities.
“Mr Nmodu is a thorough journalist who has proved his mettle in journalism and is deserving of such commanding heights,” Idris stated.
The Minister swiftly pivoted to a key government objective, calling on the new GOCOP leadership to form a critical partnership with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
He emphasized the urgent need to combat the “atrocious effects of fake news, misinformation and disinformation threatening the credibility of the journalism profession.”
“I am trusting Mr Nmodu, who has built a distinguished career in journalism molded in integrity, accountability, courage, and resilience, also to bring the same to bear in collaborating with the government to uphold the values of media fidelity and literacy, especially in the fluid digital media space,” he added.
While celebrating the new president, Idris also praised the immediate past President, Dr. Maureen Chigbo, for her efforts in “providing vibrant leadership… and bequeathing a legacy of honour, dignity, credibility and remarkable growth of the Guild.”
He urged Nmodu to “run an inclusive leadership that guarantees the participation of all GOCOP members in sustaining the collective aspirations of the Guild.”
