BENUE State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to strengthening democracy and improving the welfare of citizens, while calling for unity, peace, and collective participation in governance.
Speaking during the Democracy Day celebration at the Government House in Makurdi, Governor Alia described June 12 as more than a date but a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience, sacrifice, and enduring pursuit of freedom.
He emphasized that democracy is not merely a system of government but a dynamic force sustained by the courage of leaders, the voices of the people, and the sacrifices of patriots.
The governor paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, as well as other democracy advocates, including Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, and numerous unnamed Nigerians who stood for justice and truth.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Benue indigenes such as Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu and Senator Iyorchia Ayu in advancing democratic values.
Governor Alia commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for upholding democratic ideals that unite the nation.
He stressed that democracy must yield tangible benefits for citizens and highlighted key achievements under his administration, including the restoration of peace in previously volatile communities, clearance of salary and pension arrears, agricultural empowerment programs, road rehabilitation, school renovations, healthcare upgrades, and support for displaced persons.
He also noted ongoing youth employment initiatives and skills development programs as part of broader reforms.
The governor assured residents that these efforts were not mere promises but concrete actions already in progress.
He announced plans to establish agro-industrial hubs to boost local processing and economic growth, alongside upcoming road projects and continued support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), women-led businesses, and technology-driven solutions.
Additionally, his administration is working toward universal health insurance coverage and promoting transparency in governance.
Governor Alia called for unity among Benue citizens, urging them to reject division, hatred, and violence in favor of dialogue, compassion, and collective effort.
He emphasized that democracy is a shared responsibility, not the sole duty of government.
He expressed gratitude to security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, and citizens for their roles in maintaining peace and supporting governance, urging continued adherence to the rule of law and development efforts.
In a solemn tribute, he honored Chief MKO Abiola and all who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria’s democracy, including Benue residents who died defending their communities, describing their legacy as the foundation of the state’s democratic progress.
Reiterating his commitment to servant leadership, Governor Alia pledged to govern with humility, integrity, and focus, vowing to continue working alongside the people of Benue to achieve transformative development. He described democracy as an ongoing journey requiring faith, purpose, and shared hope for a better future.
“Let us celebrate this Democracy Day with joy, reflection, and renewed dedication to building a greater Benue and a greater Nigeria,” the Governor concluded.
