THE PRESIDENT of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Ms. Maureen Chigbo, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting ethical standards and sanitizing the online media space.
Ms. Chigbo made the remark during the launch of GOCOP’s inaugural publication: Nigeria Media Renaissance: GOCOP Perspectives on Online Publishing, and a fundraising event for the GOCOP Media Center in Abuja.
While highlighting the importance of collaboration with stakeholders to achieve the organization’s objectives, Chigbo noted that GOCOP comprises seasoned journalists with over 20 years of experience in mainstream media, all dedicated to upholding principles of truth, fairness, and balanced reporting.
To ensure compliance with ethical standards, the guild has implemented a self-regulatory mechanism.
As part of its efforts to maintain professionalism, GOCOP has established various committees, including a Disciplinary Committee/Ombudsman to address public complaints and enforce accountability, Chigbo said, as she stressed that the organization is resolute in its self-regulation mandate and will address any unprofessional conduct within the industry.
The GOCOP President acknowledged the contributions of members and supporters, including Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, Publisher of PREMIUM TIMES, who wrote the Foreword to the publication, as well as Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), who served as reviewer.
She also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, state governments, institutions, and corporate organizations for their support.
Chigbo called for generous donations to bolster GOCOP’s initiatives, particularly the construction of the GOCOP Media Centre, which will enhance members’ capacity to operate profitably.
She also urged public relations practitioners, advertisers, governments, and civil society organizations to support GOCOP-affiliated businesses, underscoring the vital role of online media in fostering a just, peaceful, and rights-respecting society.
Through its advocacy for ethical online publishing and strategic partnerships, GOCOP aims to solidify its position as a leading voice in the digital media landscape while contributing to the sector’s sustainable growth.
