THE GUILD of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) on Wednesday joined the Nigerian media fraternity in mourning the passing of one of Nigeria’s most revered media figures, veteran journalist, columnist, and author, Mr. Dan Agbese.

Agbese died on Monday, November 17, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 81 years old.

In a statement, GOCOP described the late Agbese as “one of the enduring titans of Nigerian journalism,” whose death it said constitutes a “profound loss to the nation he chronicled with such honesty and insight.”

In the statement signed by its General Secretary, Mr Sufuyan Ojeifo, GOCOP said Agbese was widely celebrated for a career defined by uncommon integrity, analytical precision, and an unwavering devotion to ethical journalism.

Agbese was a co-founder of the ground-breaking news magazine, Newswatch, alongside other media luminaries – the late Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Yakubu Mohammed.

The statement noted that throughout his distinguished career, Agbese became synonymous with investigative rigour and courageous commentary.

His “no holds barred” column in Newswatch, along with his numerous contributions to other national newspapers, were considered essential reading for policymakers, scholars, and citizens alike. His writing was noted for its scholarly weight and patriotic spirit, consistently aimed at holding power accountable.

Beyond his work in journalism, Agbese was a prolific author and biographer. His seminal works have become essential references for understanding contemporary Nigerian politics. These include “The Letterman: Inside the ‘Secret’ Letters of former President Olusegun Obasanjo” and “Ibrahim Babangida: The Military, Politics and Power in Nigeria.” His recent co-authored book, “The President Is Not Sick,” further cemented his reputation as one of the nation’s most insightful chroniclers.

The statement quoted the President of GOCOP, Mr Danlami Nmodu, to have while reflecting on the death of Agbese, stated: “Dan Agbese was a journalistic institution. His passing leaves a void that feels impossible to fill. He was a mentor to many of us, and a firm believer in a free and responsible press. We have indeed lost a giant.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr Ojeifo, the General Secretary, added: “Dan Agbese’s life was journalism in its purest form. He practised with conscience, courage, and an unshakeable commitment to truth. His wisdom and presence will be deeply missed.”

Dan Agbese leaves behind a powerful legacy of fearless truth-telling and intellectual excellence. He mentored generations of journalists who continue to shape the Nigerian media landscape, ensuring his influence will endure for years to come, GOCOP further stated, as it extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were impacted by his remarkable life and work.
