THE PRO-CHANCELLOR of Edwin Clark University, Delta State, Prof. Oladapo Afolabi, has stressed the need for the full implementation of the University Autonomy Act for academic development.
Afolabi, a former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education and former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, said this on Thursday at the valedictory speech and book presentation in honour of Prof. Olaide Adedokun who retired from the Lagos State University (LASU).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was held at the university’s main campus, Ojo.
The book is entitled: Academic Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Navigating the Challenges of Plagiarism and Other Dilemmas of Integrity in the University.”
Speaking at the event, Afolabi said the full implementation of university autonomy would lead to development of strong institutions.
He charged university management to demand full autonomy from the state actors to enable the institutions regain its transformation objectives and facilitate societal growth.
Afolabi said autonomy would enable universities to achieve operational efficiency and effectiveness.
He noted that without the realisation of autonomy for universities, the subsisting bad condition of service would remain a clog in the wheel of university system development.
He regretted the politicisation of projects and others in the system and urged universities not to see TETFUND projects executed in their schools as a privilege.
He congratulated Adedokun for her resilience and devotion to the service of humanity.
