FG Rejects Claims Of Plot Against Opposition, Reaffirms Commitment To Rule Of Law

THE FEDERAL Government has issued a firm dismissal of what it describes as a “fabricated document” alleging a state-sponsored programme to target opposition political figures.

In a press release signed by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government categorically denied the existence of any plot to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute individuals based on their political affiliations.

The clarification comes in response to a document in circulation that purported to reveal a secret multi-agency initiative, codenamed “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons).

According to the minister, the document falsely claims the task force would involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), operating under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria categorically states that it harbours no plans to unlawfully arrest, detain, or prosecute opposition figures,” the release stated, adding: “This clarification is in response to a fabricated document in circulation alleging the establishment of a non-existent multi-agency task force.”

The government labelled the authors’ claims as “deliberate disinformation,” noting they imprudently cited “multiple credible sources” to allege a planned “systematic weakening and neutralisation of opposition political activity,” with a particular focus on the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The release presented a three-point point-by-point rebuttal to the allegations including, one; that there is no such programme as “ADP4VIP;” two, that the Tinubu Administration remains “firmly and successfully focused on its core agenda,” which includes implementing economic reforms, defeating insecurity, expanding trade, and restoring investor confidence; and three, that the attempt to “frame lawful accountability as political targeting is a dangerous red herring designed to shield so-called VIPs from answering to our national laws and anti-corruption agencies.”

While stressing the government’s foundational commitment to constitutional democracy, Idris referenced Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees the right to free association and assembly, and reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s oath to uphold these protections.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the Federal Government remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, due process, and the independence of institutions,” the release continued, emphasising that “Nigeria is a constitutional democracy where law enforcement and judicial agencies are obligated to perform their duties professionally, without interference.”

A Call for Vigilance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Looking ahead to the next electoral cycle, Idris cautioned the public to expect an increase in fabricated narratives, describing them as a form of “political blackmail” by actors employing falsehood for relevance.

“With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the public should anticipate an increase in fabricated narratives… We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and to reject the politics of distortion and division.

Restating the dual pillars of Nigeria’s democracy, Idris stressed every citizen’s right to lawful political activity, and the lawful mandate of security and anti-corruption institutions to operate in the national interest.

“As we draw the curtain on 2025 and step into a new year, this government will not be distracted by those invested in perpetual politicking,” Idris affirmed.

“Nigerians deserve continuity, progress, and tangible results – and that is what the Tinubu Administration remains dedicated to delivering,” the minister said.
