FG Backtracks On Airport Scandals With ‘Compassionate’ U-Turn That Raises Eyebrows

IN A sudden and controversial reversal, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo SAN, has announced the withdrawal of criminal complaints against high-profile individuals involved in recent airport misconduct scandals, sparking viral social media criticism over perceived preferential treatment and weak enforcement of aviation laws.

Coming just days after vowing to uphold strict penalties for unruly passengers and airline staff, Keyamo’s press statement strikes a markedly different tone.

Ms. Comfort Emmanson, who was arrested for disruptive behaviour on an Ibom Air flight, will now walk free, her lifetime flying ban lifted after what Keyamo describes as her “great remorse.”

Similarly, musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1), and two ValueJet pilots, previously facing severe sanctions, have had their punishments significantly reduced.

Social media critics argue that these decisions undermine the government’s earlier tough stance on aviation security noting that if the laws are so easily bent for celebrities and well-connected individuals, what stops others from acting recklessly in the future. Others say FG actions isn’t justice but selective mercy.

Keyamo’s statement claims the decisions were made after “appeals by well-meaning individuals” and demonstrations of “penitence.”

However, sceptics question whether public figures like KWAM 1 received leniency due to influence rather than genuine accountability.

The musician, whose altercation with airline staff went viral, will now serve only a one-month flight ban, and paradoxically, FAAN has been mandated to “work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.”

Meanwhile, the two ValueJet pilots, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, will regain their licenses after a mere one-month suspension, despite their alleged role in the incident.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has yet to clarify what “mandatory professional re-appraisal” entails, raising concerns over whether accountability is being diluted.

Keyamo insists these decisions were made on “compassionate grounds,” rejecting “politically-motivated views”.
