WORKERS of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under the Joint Union Action Congress, have appealed for urgent action on welfare issues affecting morale and productivity.
The union’s president, Mrs Rifkatu Iortyer, made the appeal at a news briefing in Abuja on Friday.
Iortyer said the briefing aimed to draw the FCT Administration’s attention to long-standing issues troubling workers across ministries, departments and agencies.
She cited non-remittance of pension and National Housing Fund deductions, lack of overhead payments, and the centralisation of salary preparation and payment.
“We demand that salary desk officers in all secretariats, departments and agencies be allowed to prepare and process their respective salaries,” she said.
She condemned non-payment of allowances to Abuja Environmental Protection Board and Social Development Secretariat officers engaged in law and policy enforcement.
Other concerns included absence of financial thresholds for permanent secretaries and heads of agencies, and tenure elongation for some retired directors and officials.
“We demand the immediate removal of such officers and their replacement with qualified and deserving personnel,” Iortyer said.
She also listed unpaid wage awards, outstanding promotion arrears, poor working conditions, staff intimidation, inadequate training, and weak retention policies.
The union rejected the mass failure recorded in the 2024 promotion examination and demanded an immediate reversal.
“These problems have festered too long, causing hardship. We demand immediate action and will keep speaking out for workers and the FCT’s future,” she said. (NAN)
