THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Comrade Issa Aremu, has commended the Federal Government for reaching a mutual agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Comrade Aremu described the signing of the renegotiated agreement as a positive step towards industrial harmony and stability in Nigeria’s education sector.
According to him, the agreement reflects the Federal Government’s willingness to engage in dialogue rather than confrontation within the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said aligns with global best practices in labour relations.
He noted that sustainable industrial peace can only be achieved through continuous negotiation, mutual respect, and adherence to collectively agreed terms.
“As the apex national institute for labour education and industrial relations, MINILS views the agreement as a demonstration of responsible governance and maturity in managing labour disputes,” Aremu said, emphasising that prolonged strikes harm students, parents, and the national economy, making constructive engagement the most viable option.
He further stated that honouring agreements reached with organised labour builds trust and credibility, while preventing recurring disputes in the university system.
The DG urged both the Federal Government and ASUU to sustain open communication and ensure full implementation of the agreement in the interest of Nigerian students and national development.
