THE $20 BILLION Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been lauded as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s industrial development, symbolizing a transformative shift toward economic self-sufficiency.

The commendation was delivered by the Technical Committee of the One-Stop Shop (OSS) initiative for the sale of crude and refined products in naira during an inspection tour of the facility on Tuesday.

Led by its Coordinator, Mrs. Maureen Ogbonna, the delegation praised the refinery’s far-reaching impact across multiple sectors of the economy.

Ogbonna described the facility as a “breath of fresh air,” emphasizing its role in revolutionizing industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and construction to food production and plastics manufacturing.

“This refinery touches every aspect of our lives — there is hardly any sector left unaffected,” Ogbonna stated.

“It is a transformational project, and through the vision of the President of the Dangote Group, Nigeria is being liberated economically. This marks the beginning of an industrial revolution.”

The OSS Technical Committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s vision of achieving full domestic sufficiency in petroleum products while positioning Nigeria as a leading global exporter.

The committee pledged to address regulatory, operational, and logistical challenges to facilitate the seamless supply and sale of domestic crude oil and refined products in naira.

Reflecting on the refinery’s scale and technological sophistication, Ogbonna, who had previously visited during its construction phase, expressed continued admiration for the project’s execution.

“It is truly mind-blowing that a single individual could conceive and deliver such an ambitious venture.

“During our tour, we were astounded by every section, particularly the laboratory, which stands as an institution in itself. I am unaware of any facility in Nigeria — or even globally — that boasts such an advanced petrochemical laboratory,” she remarked.

Commending the engineering milestone, Ogbonna urged Aliko Dangote to remain steadfast in his mission, dismissing detractors and emphasizing that the refinery represents a monumental achievement for Nigeria and the world at large.

“We are deeply honored by the warm reception from the President of the Dangote Group and his team,” she said. “My advice to him is to remain undeterred by criticism. His vision was never self-serving but driven by a profound commitment to Nigeria’s future, extending far beyond Africa.”

In his response, Aliko Dangote commended the Technical Committee for its role in advancing President Tinubu’s Naira-for-Crude initiative, highlighting its positive economic impact.

He noted that the policy has contributed to reduced petroleum product prices, alleviated pressure on the US dollar, and stabilized the local currency.

However, he pointed out that due to insufficient domestic crude supply, the refinery has increasingly relied on imports from the United States in recent months to meet operational demands.

Dangote underscored the importance of bold investments in strategic sectors as a cornerstone of industrialization.

He revealed that the refinery’s construction necessitated extensive infrastructure development, including a state-of-the-art marine facility capable of accommodating the world’s largest vessels.

Reiterating the refinery’s dedication to national progress, he assured the delegation of its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.

Designed to process diverse crude types — including African, Middle Eastern, and US Light Tight Oil — the Dangote Refinery has the capacity to fulfill 100% of Nigeria’s domestic demand for petrol, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel, with additional volumes available for export.
