IF THE WORLD is to face a catastrophic end, as some religious predictions suggest, it’s likely that the divine devastation and destruction and consequent obliteration will start in the corrupt third world countries. Countries like Nepal, Kenya, Nigeria, Togo, Senegal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, Uganda, etc., that are plagued by systemic injustice, inequality, corruption, and other societal ills, may be first to bear the brunt of divine judgment that will be presided over by the Gen Z generation.

Leaders of corrupt, underdeveloped nations are out of touch with the times. In today’s information age, news spreads instantly. Gen Z, born into a digital world, is shaping the future. As digital natives, they’re pragmatic, financially savvy, and passionate about social justice, mental health, and authenticity. They’re driving change and demanding a new order.

Gen Z is redefining the world, leveraging their digital proficiency to demand purpose-driven governance in both public and private sectors. Through activism and advocacy, they’re driving social change, prioritising diversity, sustainability, and mental well-being. In Africa, this generation holds the key to a brighter future, challenging warped notions of democracy that serve only privileged elites. They’ll help reshape democracy to prioritise the masses, promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, and rejecting corruption, cronyism, and divisive politics.

The inertia of corruption, bigotry, injustice and corruption won’t last; Gen Z’s demand for change is unstoppable. Leaders who ignore this shift do so at their own peril. Neither military might nor divisive tactics can halt the momentum. The only viable option is to prioritise good governance, social justice, equity, and genuine anti-corruption efforts, ensuring prudent management of national resources.

Nigeria witnessed the power of Gen Z during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020. Sparked by widespread outrage over police brutality, harassment, and extortion. Young Nigerians, activists, and celebrities mobilised across cities, leveraging social media to connect, fundraise, and amplify their demands. The movement ultimately led to the disbandment of SARS, a police unit initially formed to combat armed robbery, but became worse than the evil it was meant to fight.

Nepal’s government is facing intense backlash from young people, known as the Gen Z protest, which began on Monday, September 8. The movement started as a response to corruption, nepotism, and a government ban on major social media platforms, but quickly escalated into violent clashes after security forces fired on protesters.

Underlying issues such as high unemployment, poverty, and perceived mismanagement of public funds fuelled the unrest, with many citizens expressing discontent over government officials’ lavish lifestyles.

Kenya’s Gen Z-led protests made headlines on June 25, 2024, when thousands demonstrated against the Finance Bill 2024, resulting in police violence and fatalities. The movement reignited in June 2025, marking its one-year anniversary, with protesters demanding justice, accountability, and an end to police brutality. The recent protests were triggered by Albert Ojwang’s death in police custody, adding to the public’s growing dissatisfaction with the government.

Bangladesh witnessed a historic Gen Z-led uprising in July 2024, as students and citizens protested against the government’s authoritarianism, corruption, and democratic backsliding. The movement, initially focused on quota reform, escalated into a broader anti-government movement, forcing Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and marking a significant shift in the country’s politics.

Gen Z is redefining the world, leveraging their digital proficiency to demand purpose-driven governance in both public and private sectors. Through activism and advocacy, they’re driving social change, prioritising diversity, sustainability, and mental well-being.

Tolerance for military intervention in some countries is unfortunate, many youths are more willing to accept military rule when elected leaders abuse power, reflecting a deeper disillusionment with democratic processes. Democracy remains the best form of government and the generation must throw its energy towards advancing it. African future is in the hands of African Gen z.

Africa’s 400 million young people, aged 15-35, are going to drive democratic change going forward. As the largest voting bloc in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Malawi, etc, they make up around 42% of registered voters. With their significant influence, they have the power to shape the continent’s future.

However, they also face challenges, including: ethnic and religious divisions: Many young Africans are still swayed by ethnic and religious sentiments, which make them puns in the leprous hands of tribal political giants. This can hinder national unity and development.

The Gen Z lack of ideological direction is also a source of concern. There’s a need for more defined ideologies to guide their political engagement and decision-making.

Democracy remains the best form of government and the generation must throw its energy towards advancing it. African future is in the hands of African Gen z.
