THE BENUE State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) has fixed November 16, 2024 to conduct local government council elections in the state.
Chairman of the commission, Dr John Chen, in a statement issued at the end of a stakeholders meeting on Friday explained that the elections could not hold on July 6, 2024 as earlier scheduled owing to logistical constraints which according to him included shortage of electoral materials.
Dr Chen said detailed guidelines will be released in due course in line with section 103(3) and 150 of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended). He called on potential candidates, stakeholders and political parties to cooperate and support BSIEC during the period.
Meanwhile Governor Hyacinth Alia had since June 6, 2024 extended the tenure of local government caretaker committee chairmen by six months following an announcement by BSIEC that it would not be able to conduct elections on July 6, 2024.
