THE CHAIRMAN of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has announced that under Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration, the board has successfully accessed three consecutive Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grants.
Adagba made the disclosure during the grand finale of the Basic Schools’ inter-school debate and quiz competition, organised by SUBEB to commemorate her one year in office, describing it as an unprecedented milestone in the state’s history.
She commended the administration’s prioritisation of teachers’ welfare, notably the implementation of the ₦75,000 minimum wage for workers, which she said has significantly boosted morale in the education sector.
The chairman reaffirmed Governor Alia’s commitment to transforming basic education in the state and praised his visionary leadership, which has driven notable improvements in infrastructure, digital integration, and overall academic excellence in Benue’s basic education sub-sector.
Adagba highlighted several achievements under her tenure, including among others, the remodelling of the SUBEB headquarters with functional internet services and an automated payroll system, the completion of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) for the recruitment of over 1,000 teachers, introducing astronomy-rich programs in basic schools and sponsoring students to an international bilateral debate competition in Indonesia, where they emerged victorious.

The executive chairman emphasised that public schools in Benue are gradually regaining their former glory under Governor Alia’s administration. She assured stakeholders of SUBEB’s openness to public scrutiny and support, which she believes will foster further transformation in the years to come.
Speaking at the event, UBEC State Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Baba, and the Commissioner for Energy, Science, Technology, and Transportation, Mr. Nick Eworo, lauded Governor Alia’s dedication to revitalising basic education. They also praised Adagba’s leadership, noting her alignment with the Governor’s vision for quality education.
Mr. Eworo specifically commended the chairman’s focus on both infrastructure and capacity building for teachers, stating: “If you have good buildings but lack well-trained personnel, the system will fail.
“Adagba has prioritised capacity building for teachers to ensure they deliver quality education to students. I’m impressed with the progress, especially the integration of technology, such as nursery and primary school pupils using laptops for learning.”
