THE BENUE State Police Command has reassured residents of its commitment to providing adequate security for the upcoming local government elections scheduled to take place on October 5, 2024.

State Commissioner of Police (CP) Mr Steve Yabanet, has ordered the deployment of police personnel across the 23 local government areas to ensure the security of lives and property.

A statement released on Thursday by the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Sewuese Anene, there will be a restriction of movement within the state from 12am to 6pm on October 5, 2024.

However, officials on essential/emergency duties and duly accredited election officials will be allowed freedom of movement.

“This is to enable a firm control of various routes and persons that could hinder a smooth running of the electoral process. Only officials on essential/ emergency duties and duly identified shall be allowed access,” the statement quoted the CP to have explained.

The commissioner warned officers posted to polling units, collation centres, and all other points during the election to be professional and civil while other security agents participating in the election security process have also been equally cautioned to maintain professionalism.

CP Yabanet further advised parents, guardians, traditional leaders, religious leaders and political party leaders to caution their children and wards against any form of violence, intimidation, vote-buying or other electoral offences, saying the police will take decisive legal actions against offenders.

According to the commissioner, with these measures in place, the police aim to provide a secure atmosphere for the elections, encouraging the electorate to exercise its franchise without fear of harassment or intimidation.
