THE BENUE State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the federal government in the ongoing construction of the Makurdi-Otukpo-Enugu dual carriageway.

Governor Hyacinth Alia made this known while receiving a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Works, led by its Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunsho Olusesan Adebiyi, at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi.

Governor Alia, who announced that the state government will play a complementary role in ensuring the smooth and timely execution of the project, assured the delegation that Benue State would assist in providing logistics, compensating affected property owners, and facilitating traffic diversion to enhance efficiency during construction.

“We are quite excited as a state about the rapid progress of this project, and I sincerely appreciate the reassurance you have given us,” Alia stated, adding that “the congestion at Wurukum roundabout has been a longstanding challenge, and the federal government’s intervention will be of immense benefit to the people of Benue.”

In a demonstration of active collaboration, the Federal Ministry of Works granted Benue State permission to rehabilitate the Makurdi-Gboko road and extend the dual carriageway to Tyo-Mu Bridge.

Alia further requested approval to extend the dual carriage to the Federal Government Housing Estate, a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing the aesthetics of Makurdi.

He also applauded the federal government’s decision to construct a flyover at Wurukum Roundabout, describing it as a major infrastructural boost for the state.

The governor also assured the delegation that the state government would launch public orientation and education campaigns to guide residents on road diversions during the construction of the overhead bridge at Wurukum.

“As part of our commitment, we will engage in extensive public awareness programs to ensure smooth traffic management.

“We are also considering diverting traffic from the New Bridge to the Old Bridge to minimise disruptions,” he added.

Alia appealed to the federal government to adhere to the initial agreement of creating a bypass at Otukpo, which he believes will support the town’s planned expansion while minimising property demolition.

He expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising infrastructure development across the country.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunsho Olusesan Adebiyi, noted that the road project, awarded in 2018, is divided into two phases.

He stated that Phase One, covering Akwanga, Lafia, and Makurdi, is near completion, while Phase Two, which spans from Makurdi to Ninth Mile, includes a significant 178 km stretch in Benue State.

Adebiyi acknowledged the need for state intervention in traffic control at Wurukum Roundabout and compensation for displaced property owners.

He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to completing the project and ensuring that Benue residents benefit from improved road infrastructure.
