THE BENUE State House of Assembly has approved Governor Hyacinth Alia’s request to obtain a ₦100 billion loan to finance key infrastructural projects across the state.
The approval was granted on Friday during an emergency sitting presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Alfred Berger.
According to the governor, this is the first time he will borrow funds since the inception of his administration in 2023.
Reading the governor’s letter to the lawmakers, the speaker explained that the loan facility would be used to fund several development projects, including the renovation and equipping of 23 general hospitals across the state, the renovation and construction of science schools, and the completion of ongoing roads, bridges, drainages, and electricity projects.
Other projects to benefit from the facility include the construction of skills acquisition centres, the building and equipping of smart schools in all federal constituencies, and the establishment of the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Ihugh.
After deliberations, members of the Assembly unanimously endorsed the loan request, citing the urgent need to improve the state’s infrastructure.
They urged the executive arm to ensure prudent and transparent use of the funds for the overall development and progress of Benue State.
