A FUNDAMENTAL rights enforcement suit filed by Adeniyi Adeyemi, the Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), on Thursday, suffered a setback. Adeyemi sued the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, Nigeria Police Force and Assistant-Inspector General of Police as 1st to 4th respondents respectively. The alleged fake DG, through his lawyer, Ademola Oyedokun, sought six reliefs before Justice Obiora Egwuatu. Adeyemi, who is currently in police custody, had prayed the court to admit him to bail, release him from detention and allow him to seek medical attention from health practitioners of his own…

THERE are departures the heart receives quietly, after the long preparation that illness and age sometimes impose. And there are departures that arrive before the mind has learnt how to say goodbye. The departure of Oladotun Samson Oladipo (DOT) to those who knew him closely, belongs to the latter. As colleagues, family and friends prepare to gather in his honour, we are confronted by the strange finality of remembering a man who, until so recently, was part of the living conversation. A journalist, publisher, husband, father, brother and friend has suddenly become a memory. Yet memory is not a small…
THE ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University (SSU) chapter, has given the Sokoto State Government a two-week ultimatum to implement the signed agreements reached. This is contained in a statement signed by the branch Chairman and Secretary, Dr. Bello Musa and Zulkallaini Shehu respectively, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Sokoto. The union said the action followed a meeting held with the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hamza Maishanu, along with other management officials and ASUU representatives, after the expiration of a two-month period earlier agreed. “After extensive deliberations, an…
Restricting Obi Could Backfire On APC THE ND’IGBO for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu 2027 Forum (NDI-ABAT) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors Forum to review its political strategies ahead of the 2027 presidential election, warning that restrictive and confrontational tactics against opposition figures could prove counterproductive. In a statement issued on Thursday, signed by its National Coordinator, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group specifically criticised what it described as reported political restrictions involving Benue State governor, Hyacinth Alia, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ presidential flagbearer, Mr. Peter Obi. NDI-ABAT said such actions could generate public sympathy for opposition politicians…
A TRADITIONAL Ugandan kingdom selected a television news anchor on Wednesday to succeed King Oyo Nyimba, who died last month aged 34 after becoming the world’s youngest reigning monarch when he took the throne at age 3. Oyo Nyimba died on August 27 in the United States where he was receiving treatment for cancer. While Uganda is a constitutional republic, Oyo Nyimba ruled Tooro in western Uganda, one of the former British colony’s ancient kingdoms, which wield enormous cultural and social influence. At a press conference in the kingdom’s capital of Fort Portal, the royal clan’s succession committee announced it…
THE NIGERIAN Army has appointed Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose as new commander to lead military operations against Boko Haram and its Islamic State-backed splinter faction in the northeast, replacing the head of the operation less than two years after his appointment, an army spokesperson said on Wednesday. The appointment comes ahead of presidential elections due in January, with insecurity remaining a major concern after years of insurgent violence, banditry and kidnappings across parts of the country. General Ajose, who previously served at Army Headquarters in Abuja, takes over from Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, the 15th commander of Operation Hadin…
BRENT crude futures breached $100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since July 24 as escalating attacks in the Middle East, including on tankers, stifled hopes of a normalisation of oil shipping in the region. The move brought futures prices into line with physical crude and fuel markets, where prices have already been trading above the psychological threshold. Front-month Brent crude futures were up $2.74, or 2.8%, at $100.66 a barrel by 1315 GMT, after earlier touching $100.95. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up $2.74, or 3%, at $95.77 a barrel, its highest level since early June.…
ISRAEL has told Britain it must close its East Jerusalem consulate within a month, Israeli officials said on Wednesday, as a retaliatory step against sanctions that Britain, France and Canada have announced against settlements. The sanctions are among the strongest collective actions taken by major Western allies of Israel over Israeli settlements, and have prompted intense pushback in Israel weeks before it holds a general election. While the effect of the sanctions may be mostly symbolic, they highlight Israel’s growing isolation among countries it once counted as close allies over its war in Gaza and expansion of settlements in the…
