AN EKITI State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday fixed January 20, 2025 a case between the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, and the institution’s former ASUU chairman, Dr Akinyemi Gabriel Omonijo.
The presiding judge, Justice Adeniyi O. Familoni of Court 8, adjourned the matter following the adoption of motions regularising the suit.
Fasina in the suit, No: HAD/143/2023 had sometime in 2023 dragged Omonijo before the court claiming that the latter falsely accused him of drawing double salaries at the same time in two different universities.
Fasina is demanding for ₦500 million from Omonijo for libel.
However, in a countersuit, Omonijo is demanding for the payment of ₦250 million from Fasina for defamation.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, Mr. Tiamiyu Adegboyega, who appeared for the claimant, moved a motion to regularise claimant’s reply to defendant’s statement of defence and defence counterclaim.
While not opposing the claimant’s motion, the defence counsel, Bayo Idowu also moved a motion withdrawing defendant’s application requesting the court to commence hearing of his counterclaim in the event that the claimant was not ready to pursue his case. He equally moved a motion for adoption of all court papers in the matter.
Adegboyega did not object to the motion to withdraw the application as well.
Justice Familoni ruled in favour of all the motions and adjourned to January 20, 2025 for trial.
