AFCON: Senegal Triumphs In Extra-Time Chaos After Walkout, Missed ‘Panenka’

IN ONE of the most dramatic, chaotic, and controversial finals in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history, Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 after extra-time in Rabat.

The match, which stretched to a staggering 124 minutes of regulation and extra-time, was decided by a single moment of brilliance but overshadowed by an unprecedented player walkout, a disallowed goal, and a penalty miss of historic proportions.

The deadlock was finally broken four minutes into the first period of extra-time.

Pape Gueye collected the ball near midfield, drove past a challenge from Achraf Hakimi, and unleashed a spectacular, rising left-footed shot that flashed into the far corner of Bounou’s net.

The goal sent the Senegalese section of the crowd into raptures and piled immense pressure on a Moroccan side that had dominated the tournament defensively.

However, the path to that goal was anything but straightforward.

The match exploded into controversy deep into second-half stoppage time. In the 90+2nd minute, Senegal’s Mamadou Sarr thought he had scored the winner, heading in a rebound after a teammate’s header hit the post. The goal was immediately disallowed by the referee, who whistled a foul in the buildup – a decision that incensed the Senegalese bench.

The tension reached a boiling point minutes later. Following a corner, a tussle in the penalty area between Senegal’s El Hadji Malick Diouf and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz led to a VAR check.

Despite Díaz appearing to initiate contact, a penalty was awarded to Morocco. In protest, the entire Senegal squad, led by manager Pape Thiaw, walked off the pitch and headed for the tunnel, bringing the game to a complete halt for several minutes.

It was veteran forward, Sadio Mané, who played the role of peacemaker, urging his teammates to return to the field and see out the match.

The penalty, taken after a 15-minute delay, then produced one of the most astonishing moments in final history.

Brahim Díaz, seeking redemption, attempted a soft, chipped “Panenka” penalty. Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy stood his ground and caught the effort with ease, leaving Díaz utterly distraught and ensuring the match went to extra-time.

Morocco had several chances to equalize, most notably when defender Nayef Aguerd thundered a header against the crossbar in the 108th minute.

Senegal also missed a golden opportunity to seal the victory when Cherif Ndiaye, with an open goal at his mercy, somehow swept the ball wide after Bounou’s initial save.

The final whistle confirmed Senegal’s second AFCON title, but the narrative was dominated by the extraordinary events that unfolded.

The match raised immediate questions about refereeing consistency, the limits of player protest, and the immense psychological pressure of a continental final, cementing its place as an unforgettable – if deeply contentious – showpiece.
