AUTHORITIES of the Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), have confirmed that its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tor Joe Iorapuu, is on annual and overseas leave with effect from Tuesday, June 10, 2025, following approval by the institution’s Governing Council.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr Mrs Bibiana Ayabam, for the Registrar and on behalf of the Council, named Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Simon Terver Ubwa, as the Acting Vice Chancellor for the duration of Iorapuu’s leave.
The announcement comes in the wake of allegations by top management staff who had confided in National Record that Professor Iorapuu had been suspended over financial mismanagement and administrative infractions, including non-implementation of approved salary increases and inflated project costs.
Rumours of the suspension which began circulating on Facebook as early as June 5 and the allegations by insiders claimed that the university’s Bursar, Mr. Amos Egwurube, and Director of ICT, Mr. Terna Abuul, had also been placed on indefinite suspension, following alleged failures in the institution’s portal system that reportedly led to revenue losses of up to N2 billion.
While the university has not addressed the allegations directly, it cautioned the public to disregard any information not released through its official channels.
However, some sources within the institution, speaking on condition of anonymity, insisted that the vice chancellor’s departure was disciplinary rather than procedural.
The sources linked the suspension to the ongoing probe into the university’s finances and alleged unauthorized decisions made without the governing council’s or state governor’s approval.
The statement did not also clarify whether the alleged suspension of the ICT director and the bursar were mere speculations as it only debunked that of Iorapuu.
The latest developments revive scrutiny of the university’s leadership, which has previously been at the centre of controversy, including the arrest of a journalist who reported on the institution’s technical and administrative issues.
