As Workers Are Locked Down Behind Closed Doors!
SINCE the current democratic dispensation in 1999, Nigerian workers and the entire working class in Nigeria will be unable to celebrate May Day in their usual revolutionary fanfare and bravado.
Even when some May Day celebrations were outlawed in the era of military juntas, workers usually defy such draconian declarations.
However, under the prevailing scenario of an unprecedented global pandemic, National Record, scheduled to debut on May Day, has decided to use the historic occasion to also publish personal and collective experiences of workers, their families, trade unions and civil society organisations in the course of the lockdown, and other measures, put in place by the federal and some state governments.
In recording their experiences, focus should be on narratives around coping mechanisms with the lockdown, union interventions and neighbourhood responses, among other related issues.
Given the meaning or importance attached to the day by workers all over the world, we will welcome BRIEF SOLIDARITY MESSAGES from unions, memorable photos from workers especially those in the frontline of the battle against coronavirus.
