THERE is a persistent myth in the development sector that credibility only arrives with scale. Build for a decade, reach millions, and perhaps the recognition will follow. The WeCare Leadership and Impact Mentorship Programme, known as WLIMP, has just decisively dismantled that assumption.

The programme has been named Best Youth Social Impact Award at the Nigeria Digital PR Summit, in Lagos state, a recognition that is far more than a trophy for a young initiative. It is a signal that in an era of declining public confidence in conventional development approaches, the most catalytic interventions are often the ones bold enough to invest in people before they hold positional power. For a programme still in its infancy, the award is a testimony to dedication, commitment, and the possibility that big ideas can stand out long before they become mature, if well nurtured.

Dr. Dahiru framed the programme’s philosophy with a question that cuts to the heart of the development challenge: “Who prepares the prepared?” She has argued that while talent is distributed evenly around the world, preparation is not, making the gap between potential and opportunity a defining challenge of our era, one that can only be closed by individuals who are deliberate about preparing others. WLIMP is that deliberateness in institutional form, and the Fellows are its proof of concept.

I have had the rare privilege of working alongside Dr. Jamila Mohammed Dahiru, the Executive Director, to see her vision through reality. Instructively, what Dr. Dahiru has built is far from a one-off youth event. WLIMP is an intensive eight-to-ten-week virtual leadership and professional development initiative designed to equip emerging Nigerian youth with the skills, exposure, and networks to lead in public service, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community development. It runs on weekly masterclasses, mentorship circles, career-focused workshops, and, critically, capstone projects that translate knowledge into practical social-impact solutions.

The fellows drawn from competitive selections with rigorous criteria, are trained across transformational leadership, governance, civic responsibility, communication, digital skills, entrepreneurship, employability, and project management. The WLIMP model is deliberate because it moves beyond inspiration to preparation, and beyond preparation to measurable contribution.

The remarkable feedbacks and many milestones, including this latest award all matter because they show that the model is working. The 2026 cohort selected fifty young people from applications received across Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, and Rwanda, a testament to the programme’s growing regional reach and to the appetite for structured leadership formation among young Africans. That cohort culminated in the inaugural WeCare Leadership Conference, held on August 20, 2026, at the Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre in Bauchi, which drew 436 registered delegates and nearly 30 partner organizations spanning civil society, government agencies, and the private sector.

Former INEC Chairman Professor Attahiru Jega delivered the keynote address on “Leadership for Impact: Why Youth Innovation is Nigeria’s Next Frontier,” challenging young Nigerians not to withdraw from political engagement but to participate actively as voters, party members, and candidates, and warning that political apathy risks entrenching the very governance failures that restrict economic opportunity. At the conference, 36 cohort fellows were officially recognized, with participants attending from the Federal Capital Territory and seven states: Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Plateau. These are young people who now carry the skills, networks, and confidence to occupy leadership spaces and contribute to national development.

So, it is in order, to acknowledge some flowers. The award belongs, first and foremost, to the pioneer Fellows of WLIMP. Their efforts, their capstone projects, their commitment through weeks of rigorous mentorship, and their willingness to be prepared are what transformed a curriculum into a credible pipeline of solution-breeders.

Dr. Dahiru’s vision, as she articulated at the conference, is that leadership should be measured by positive impact rather than the title or position held. The Best Youth Social Impact Award is proof that this vision is already bearing fruit at the very stage when the sector too often looks away. It is a proud moment for WeCare and for the young pioneer Fellows of WLIMP whose efforts have translated into this recognition.

WLIMP does not exist in a vacuum. It sits within the broader architecture of the WeCare Centre for Community Awareness and Empowerment Initiative, which Dr. Dahiru founded to champion education, gender equality, and community empowerment across Northern Nigeria. The organisation’s track record provides the credibility that makes WLIMP’s early recognition possible.

WeCare has supported the reintegration of more than 390 out-of-school children into formal education in Bauchi State and provided over N3 million in direct assistance to more than 200 women and young people, alongside medical, scholarship, and humanitarian support. Dr. Dahiru’s personal commitment is equally striking. As Commissioner for Education, she forfeited her salary and allowances, redirecting the funds back to the ministry for departmental use. This is leadership measured not by title but by sacrifice and impact, the very ethic WLIMP seeks to instil in its fellows.

The significance of the Nigeria Digital PR Summit recognition lies precisely in its timing. The award came at the infancy stage, when the sector too often looks away. It signals that a programme need not wait for decades of scale to be taken seriously. What matters is the rigour of the model, the credibility of the leadership, and the demonstrable trajectory of impact. WLIMP has all three.

For funders and policymakers, the lesson is clear: early-stage does not mean low-stakes. The most catalytic interventions are often those that build the capacity of young people to create solutions before they have positional power. Recognition like this does not just celebrate a programme. It de-risks the next bold idea. It tells a generation of young Nigerians that their preparation matters now, not in some distant future when they have climbed the ladder.

To the Fellows, this is your proof of concept. To everyone building in the early innings, keep going. The work speaks before the scale does.
