CHRICED Condemns Oyo, Borno School Abductions, Criticises Presidency Over Response

THE RESOURCE Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has condemned the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oyo and Borno states, describing the incidents as evidence of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement issued on June 6, 2026, CHRICED’s Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, expressed outrage over the May 15 attacks, which resulted in the kidnapping of dozens of schoolchildren and teachers.

According to the organisation, gunmen attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting 39 students and seven teachers. CHRICED said two of the kidnapped teachers were later reportedly killed.

The group also cited a separate attack on the same day in Borno State, where suspected Boko Haram insurgents allegedly invaded the Mussa community in Askira-Uba LGA and abducted 42 schoolchildren.

Describing the incidents as part of a growing pattern of insecurity targeting educational institutions, CHRICED said schools across the country have increasingly become vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.

“These attacks are not isolated. They form part of a relentless pattern of unchecked banditry, terrorism and mass abductions that have turned our schools—supposed sanctuaries of learning—into hunting grounds for criminals,” the statement read.

The organisation accused the Federal Government of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect citizens and ensure public safety, noting that the continued captivity of the victims raises concerns about the government’s commitment to addressing insecurity.

CHRICED also criticised what it described as the insensitivity of the Presidency amid the national crisis. The group referenced the recent distribution of luxury vehicles by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, arguing that such actions were inappropriate while families of abducted children continue to suffer uncertainty and grief.

The civil society organisation said leadership during periods of national distress requires empathy and solidarity with victims rather than displays that could be perceived as political or extravagant.

The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise the rescue of all abducted students and implement reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture aimed at improving accountability, transparency and effectiveness.

CHRICED further urged the First Lady to demonstrate greater sensitivity to the plight of affected families, stressing that public displays of opulence at a time of widespread insecurity send the wrong message to Nigerians.

“Nigeria cannot continue on this path. Our children deserve safety. Our parents deserve peace. Our nation deserves leaders who feel the pain of the people,” the statement added.

The organisation reiterated its demand for urgent government action to secure the release of the abducted victims and prevent future attacks on schools across the country.
