By Our Reporter, With Agency Reports

IN AN unprecedented move that has sent shockwaves through the monarchy and United Kingdom (UK), Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations that he passed confidential government documents to the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned 66 on Thursday, was taken into custody and questioned by detectives from Thames Valley Police.

The arrest marks a historic low for the senior royal, once a dashing naval hero, and represents the most significant criminal investigation ever to touch the modern House of Windsor.

The investigation centers on claims that Andrew, while serving as the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment, forwarded sensitive government reports to Epstein.

These files, released as part of a vast tranche of US government documents relating to Epstein, reportedly include briefings on Vietnam, Singapore, and other nations Andrew visited on official trips in 2010.

At the time, Epstein was already a convicted sex offender, having registered as one in 2008 for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest in a statement, with Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright saying: “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office. We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”

The force’s officers were also seen searching Andrew’s former residence, Royal Lodge, on the Windsor Estate, while unmarked police cars and plain-clothed officers gathered at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, where he currently resides.

Buckingham Palace, which was not informed of the arrest in advance, issued a somber statement from King Charles III.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the King said.

While acknowledging the family had not been forewarned, Charles stated that the authorities had the monarchy’s “full and wholehearted support and cooperation,” adding emphatically: “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”

The current police investigation is specifically focused on the alleged mishandling of government documents, a charge of misconduct in public office, a serious offense that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

It is not related to the sexual abuse allegations from the Giuffre lawsuit. However, the scandal continues to widen.

Thames Valley Police is also assessing a separate report from the anti-monarchy group Republic, which alleges Andrew was involved in the trafficking of a woman to Britain for sex in 2010.

Furthermore, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for an investigation into whether Epstein trafficked women through London’s Stansted Airport without proper checks, a claim Essex police confirmed they are now looking into.

Andrew, who remains in police custody for questioning, has not commented publicly since the release of the Epstein documents.

He has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to his friendship with Epstein, expressing only regret that it occurred.

The arrest places Andrew in a starkly small group of royals formally accused of serious crimes, a far cry from his sister, Princess Anne’s 2002 conviction for a dog-biting incident.

It is a constitutional crisis that strikes at the heart of the monarchy, forcing King Charles to navigate the impossible position of supporting his brother while publicly affirming the primacy of the law.

        Flashback

The arrest is the culmination of years of scandal that have progressively isolated Andrew from royal life.

Just last October, in a dramatic move to protect the institution, King Charles took the unprecedented step of stripping his younger brother of all his remaining titles, reducing him from “His Royal Highness The Duke of York” to the commoner-style “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.”

At the same time, the King forced him to relinquish the lease on his 30-room Royal Lodge mansion on the Windsor Estate, relocating him to the more modest Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate.

A palace statement at the time described the censures as “deemed necessary” and emphasised that the King’s “thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”

That action followed Andrew’s earlier fall from grace. He was forced to step down from his trade envoy role in 2011 and quit all official royal duties in 2019.

In 2022, he settled a devastating civil lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager – allegations he has always denied.

Ms. Giuffre, who died by suicide last year, had her family release a statement reacting to Thursday’s arrest: “Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty.”
