THE RADIO, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has urged the Federal Government to ensure speedy implementation of a special media and cultural salary structure for members.
Its National President, Prince Emeka Kalu, made the call during the inauguration of an ultra-modern hall constructed by the RATTAWU chapter of the Broadcasting of Oyo State (BCOS).
Kalu said that the union had prioritised the negotiation of well-being packages for its members.
“The implementation of the special media and cultural salary structures for members remains the major focus of the union. We will continue this struggle to a logical conclusion; we are not going to do that by just requesting it over and over.
“We have to regularly train our members, bring them up to par and make sure that they are more productive. They are adding so much value to the workforce, unfortunately the government doesn’t seem to recognise the fact that our members play an extra critical role in nation building, and are essential service providers,” he said.
The Guest Speaker, Chief Adegboyega Adegoke, and Chairman of Solutions F.M. Ibadan, while speaking on the theme “Leadership at a Time like This”, emphasised that Nigeria needs good leaders to stem the tide of brain drain ravaging the nation.
He said that electing good leaders into positions of authority would lead to massive infrastructural development.
He, however, said that this could only be achieved when citizens vote for the right people and desist from vote buying and selling.
Adegoke, a major sponsor of the project, charged RATTAWU not to be complacent with their achievements but strive more to secure good welfare for its members.
The Executive Chairman of BCOS, Mrs Dotun Olaitan, commended RATTAWU, BCOS Chapter, for its commitment toward the success of the project.
She urged other unions to emulate the gesture for the progress of the foremost broadcasting house in Oyo state.
Earlier, the Chairman of RATTAWU, BCOS Chapter, Mr Kolapo Carew, urged the members of staff to remain united for their benefit and that of BCOS.
He said the project was constructed through donations and not from the staff monthly dues.
Carew advised the incoming executives to focus on more laudable projects, especially staff training and tour, so as to gain modern technological knowledge in line with current digital broadcasting. (NAN)
