IN REACTION to the escalating insecurity in Benue State, Dr David Olofu, President and Founder of the Apa Legacy Sustainability Initiative, has called on the Federal Government to construct highway along the banks of River Benue corridor, stretching from Lokoja in Kogi State through Benue communities to Taraba State.

        Dr Olofu during the visit.

Dr Olofu made the appeal during a visit to several communities in Apa LGA recently attacked by suspected herdsmen.

The affected communities include Ankpali-Edikwu, Ojantele/Akpete, and Ikobi.

Olofu expressed concern over the persistent insecurity in the state, attributing it in part to the vast, ungoverned spaces along the riverbanks, which serve as hideouts for criminal elements.

According to him, constructing a highway along the river corridor would act as a strategic deterrent to criminal activities while also fostering economic development.

“These criminals exploit the vulnerability of these unmonitored areas as bases to carry out their activities,” he stated.

During the visit, Olofu provided financial assistance to victims and emphasized the critical role of infrastructure in enhancing security. He noted that improved road networks would enable security forces to respond more swiftly to attacks, reducing casualties and damage.

“With good roads, security agencies can promptly deploy to affected communities when alerted. Without proper access, timely intervention becomes difficult,” he explained.

Describing the frequent attacks as an epidemic, Olofu urged unity among residents, transcending ethnic, religious, and political divides to combat the menace.

He also encouraged youths to participate in community policing by forming vigilante groups to support security efforts.

Reflecting on the impact of the violence, he lamented: “Many of our people can no longer farm or live safely in their homes. This situation is not only painful but devastating.”

Olofu called on the Benue State Government to establish a Border Communities Development Commission (BCDC) to accelerate development in vulnerable border areas.

Prof. David Salifu, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Apa Legacy Sustainability Initiative, reiterated that the visit was motivated by compassion, not politics. “We are here out of love, mutual respect, and solidarity with the affected communities,” he said.

Elder statesman, Chief Bernard Omaiye, commended Dr Olofu and Prof. Salifu for their humanitarian efforts, urging all Idoma sons and daughters to unite against the herdsmen attacks.

Meanwhile, the Clan Head of Edikwu, Chief David Otokpa, and the Aadu of Edikwu, Chief Elaigwu Abutu, confirmed that 12 people were killed and several others injured in the Ankpali-Edikwu attack.

They expressed gratitude to Olofu and his delegation for their support during the community’s time of grief.
