THE MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims that the explosion near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja was a failed suicide bombing attempt.
Speaking to journalists after inspecting road projects on Wednesday, Wike explained that the incident occurred when an individual unknowingly picked up an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from a quarry site.
He stated that the report by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was incorrect.
“Security agencies never confirmed this as a suicide bombing. We must avoid spreading unnecessary panic. NEMA is not the primary security authority on such matters,” Wike said.
“What actually happened was that a person took an explosive device from a quarry — where controlled blasting occurs — without realizing the danger.
“The device detonated while in his possession. This was not a suicide attack. We must be responsible with our reporting to prevent misleading the public,” Wike emphasized.
A number of media outlets had reported that an explosion along the Nyanya-Mararaba road near the barracks had caused alarm among residents.
While NEMA had suggested the blast involved a failed suicide bomber attempting to enter the barracks, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command stated that an investigation, including forensic analysis, was underway to determine the cause.
Several media outlets had also reported that Monday’s explosion injured a passerby.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “Explosion at Bus Stop Opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation Under Control,” and promised further updates.
