THE SOCIAL Mobilization Technical Committee (SOMTEC) has pledged to intensify its health advocacy efforts across Benue State, particularly targeting vulnerable groups, women, and children.
The commitment was reaffirmed during SOMTEC’s first quarterly meeting of 2025, held on Tuesday at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism in Makurdi.
Expanding Beyond Makurdi
State Coordinator Elizabeth Uta highlighted SOMTEC’s ongoing initiatives, supported by UNICEF, to promote healthy practices in churches and markets. However, she noted that limited counterpart funding from the state government has restricted activities largely to the capital. Uta called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, including ministries, agencies, and civil society groups, to broaden the campaign’s reach.
“The Ministry of Information alone cannot drive this effort. We need insights from Health, BSEMA, Women Affairs, and other partners to make a real impact,” she emphasized.
Two-Month Health Campaign Launched
Mrs. Comfort Ejima Ajunwa, Director of Information, Public Enlightenment and Orientation, announced a two-month campaign featuring six advocacy and sensitization meetings. The initiative will focus on maternal and child health, educating communities on essential practices such as immunization for pregnant women and newborns, as well as proper nutrition for children under three.
A Legacy of Advocacy
Facilitator Dr. Maria Onyilo traced SOMTEC’s origins to 1992 as a UNICEF-backed platform for promoting healthier living. She stressed the importance of sustained messaging on hygiene, immunization, and exclusive breastfeeding. “Simple practices like handwashing can save lives. Our role is to drive this change through consistent advocacy,” she said.
A work plan for the next three months will be developed to guide activities, with an emphasis on awareness-raising and stakeholder engagement.
Government Urges Greater Efforts
Representing the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Ajunwa urged participants to prioritize the wellbeing of Benue’s citizens. The meeting included representatives from key ministries, agencies, and media organizations, fostering a multi-sectoral approach to health advocacy.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 30, 2025, as stakeholders aim to build on the momentum and expand health interventions across the state.
