THE NIGERIA Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, has urged the federal government to enhance security for journalists, warning that press freedom is undermined by threats and intimidation.
Speaking at a public lecture marking the 2025 World Press Freedom Day, NUJ Chairman Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, emphasized that journalists lack adequate protection despite their constitutional role in holding leaders accountable.
“It is like sending someone to catch a lion barehanded,” he remarked. Ugber disclosed plans for a Media Enhancement Bill to address journalists’ safety and welfare.
Keynote speaker Dr. Cletus Akwaya, Publisher of Daily Asset, highlighted Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s dual impact on media — boosting efficiency but risking misinformation and job losses.
He called for AI research teams within media associations to guide responsible adoption.
Dr. Ben Ebe, CEO of Zeyani Associated Media, noted AI’s potential in verification and data journalism but stressed the need for policy safeguards against bias and censorship.
Meanwhile, Brothers FM GM, Mr. Elaigu Abutu, urged journalists to adapt, calling AI “a moving train” they cannot ignore.
Other speakers, including veteran journalist, Terlumun Vaatia, emphasized human oversight of AI, while NUJ officials encouraged skill development to leverage the technology ethically.
The event concluded with a consensus that while AI presents challenges, journalists must balance innovation with press freedom and accuracy.
