THE GLOBAL movement #ForDemocracy is gaining fresh momentum this week as the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) prepares to launch its first major event of the year, focusing on securing fair pay and protections for platform workers worldwide.
The event, a global webinar titled: “For Democracy that Delivers for Platform Workers,” will take place on Thursday, April 24, from 13:30 to 15:00 CEST, says Luc Triangle, General Secretary of ITUC.
“If platform companies succeed in evading responsibility, this harmful model could spread across industries, lowering wages and increasing instability for all workers,” Triangle emphasized in a message stressing the broader implications of the fight to supporters.
The campaign organizers are urging supporters to join Thursday’s webinar and add their voices to the growing call for global labor justice. With powerful corporate interests lobbying against change, advocates say now is the time for action.
As digital platforms continue to transform industries from food delivery to elder care, millions of workers are facing precarious conditions without the benefits and protections traditionally afforded to employees. Many of these workers are denied basic labour rights, while platform companies often argue they are not bound by employment laws.
The webinar will spotlight stories from workers on the frontlines, as labour organizers push for the International Labour Organization (ILO) to adopt a binding Convention at the upcoming International Labour Conference in June.
Such a Convention would establish global rules to ensure fair treatment and protections for platform workers.
