THE VICE Chancellor of Amadeus University, Amizi in Abia, Prof. Samuel Nzotta, has called for an amendment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Act to be amended to include research grants to scholars in private universities.
Nzotta made the call during the university’s pre-matriculation media briefing on Thursday.
He said that the TETFUND intervention would help to ensure that private universities in the country fulfil their vision and mission.
“This will enhance staff development in private universities and ensure holistic research activities in the country generally.
“This shall be salutary to economic development of Nigeria,” Nzotta said.
He also called on public-spirited individuals in the state to assist the university with dedicated infrastructural projects to enhance its teaching, research and growth.
Nzotta described the institution as a world class, digital university, where research, innovation and a culture of excellence are emphasised.
He disclosed that the official opening and maiden matriculation ceremony would be graced by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
According to him, Akpabio would perform the official unveiling of the university as the Special Guest of Honour, while Gov. Alex Otti would be the Guest of Honour.
Nzotta said that the 40 pioneer students admitted into the university for the 2024/2025 academic session would be formally admitted into the institution during the ceremony.
He said that the university commenced lectures in October 2024, following the approval of 19 programmes in four faculties by the National Universities Commission.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the approved faculties include Engineering, Science and Computing, Social and Management Sciences as well as Allied Health Sciences.
Nzotta also said that the university had accelerated the processes of establishing some collaborations with various universities in the country and internationally.
“This is in addition to some collaborations with research-based institutions and corporate bodies.
“The Founder and Proprietor, Dr Godwin Nwabunka, has provided an initial research fund of N10 million to kickstart research activities in the university,” the vice-chancellor said.
He further said that the university had established a modern and technologically advanced JAMB Computer Based Test Centre on campus to increase its visibility amongst prospective admission candidates. (NAN)
