THE INDEFINITE nationwide strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) is to continue as negotiations between government and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions failed to reach agreement on Thursday.
The industrial action kicked off Monday with a firm resolution by JAC that the unions will not resume work until their members receive their withheld four months’ salaries.
An impeccable source within JAC, who declined to be quoted as he is not authorised to speak on the strike, told National Record after a meeting with government officials on Thursday, that the leadership of the two unions were resolute on their demand to go on with the strike until the withheld salaries were paid.
The meeting with JAC, held at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, had the outgoing Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Nasir Gwarzo, in attendance.
The four-day old strike, announced on Sunday and commenced on Monday, has paralysed activities in public universities that are in session.
JAC had consistently called on sacked Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, to comply with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the payment of the withheld salaries.
