ORGANIZERS of the nationwide hunger protests have announced that the demonstrations will resume on Nigeria’s Independence Day Anniversary on October 1, 2014.
The hunger protests, also tagged #EndBadGovernance protests, commenced on Thursday, August 1, ending on Saturday, August 10.
The core focus of the protests was to express popular discontent against the generalised economic hardship as a result of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s neo-liberal policies which orchestrated galloping inflation, suffocating Nigerians across class divides.
It was hoped that the protests would compel the government to reconsider these policies that have stoked generalised hunger but President Tinubu remained adamant and appealed to the protesters in particular and Nigerians in general for understanding, assuring that the situation will not endure.
While personnel of the various security agencies clamped down on protesters in towns and cities across the country, particularly the North, leading to the killing of dozens of protesters, the popular resistance endured, and frustrated fluid social and economic activities, including in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, even when there was no physical protest.
On Saturday, Omoyele Sowore, online publisher and the presidential candidate of the Action Alliance Congress (AAC), said to be one of the key organisers of the hunger protest, announced in an interview on News Central TV that the hunger protests will resume on October 1, 2024.
According to him, organisers are now focused on strategizing on the next phase of the protests. “This protest will resume at the beginning of October and might even start earlier depending on situational variables,” Sowore said.
