A seven-member panel of the apex court in a unanimous verdict on the appeal delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, declared that the conviction of the appellants was null and void. According to Justice Eko, the declaration was on the ground that Justice Mohammed Idris, who ab initio delivered the judgment sentencing the appellants, was already a Justice of the Court of Appeal, as at the time he delivered the sentence.
Noting that on-the-ground-assessments have shown that Kano is at the stage of widespread community infection, especially in the densely populated core local government areas of the metropolis – Dala, Municipal and Gwale, the group recommend the need to establish the extent and pattern of the epidemic by rapidly expanding testing and the provision of more testing centres and kits; the provision of more bed spaces for isolation, holding areas and case management of patients and the unified management protocols for all covid-19 patients in the state and the urgent need to procure and deliver of sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for protection of medical personnel, a significant number of whom had been infected in the early days of the infection in the state.
“CACOVID is already setting up a 310 bed isolation center at Sani Abacha stadium in Kano. We are extending that capacity by another 150 beds at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano, which is being converted into an isolation center now. These two centers will be operational pending the final validation by the Infection Prevention and Control team, which we expect will be completed in the coming days.”
Lagos has since the index case maintained the unenviable position with highest daily infections.
Mrs Nwankwo was arraigned on Wednesday before Senior Magistrate Ojo at Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
“Our findings indicate a trend of febrile [feverish] and respiratory illness that progresses to death within one to two weeks. These deaths occurred in various localities in Kano and are predominantly amongst elderly people with underlying medical conditions. This presentation mirrors severe COVID-19 cases reported around the world.”

The deceased’s uncle, Mr Eje Philip Agwu, told National Record in a telephone conversation that both husband and wife are being held at Lagos State CID, Alagbon for suspected murder. The couple, National Record learnt, had on Monday reported the death to the police as suicide by hanging.
“We didn’t invite people. We were trying to move people back and observe social distancing and it was delaying the funeral. We just have to do it because people are not ready to leave. What are we going to do?”
