YEMEN’s Iran-aligned Houthis have attacked Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, they said on Sunday, two days after the kingdom signed a defence pact with Turkey and Pakistan in response to growing regional instability from the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The alliance with Sunni Muslim U.S. allies, Turkey and Pakistan, is intended to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression and stipulates that an armed attack against any of the three would be regarded as an attack on all. It was not clear whether or how either Pakistan or Turkey would join in any Saudi response to the latest attacks. The…
IRAN said it was nearing a final pact with Oman defining new shipping lanes between them through the Strait of Hormuz but repeated that the U.S. must meet other conditions, including compensation and an end to sanctions and military threats, before the strategic waterway is reopened. The strait, through which about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas flowed prior to the conflict, has been effectively blocked since the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran on February 28, pushing up oil prices and inflation. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that talks with Oman on arrangements for…
BY LANRE OGUNDIPE THERE is a curious contradiction in Nigeria’s economic story today. From the distance at which economists, investors and international financial institutions observe the country, the picture is beginning to look considerably better. Inflation has moderated. The external position has improved. Fiscal conditions have strengthened. Economic growth has remained positive. The reforms of the past three years, difficult and deeply unpopular as some of them have been, are beginning to produce signs of macroeconomic stability. That is worth acknowledging. A country may attract greater investor confidence while the small business owner remains worried about the cost of credit.…

THE EXECUTIVE Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has dismissed online reports linking the NRS to an imaginary fraud related to the Frontier Exploration Fund, calling it sponsored fake news. The report had alleged the transfer of $279 million from the Fund’s account to some unnamed accounts and claimed that Adedeji and the NRS were in the know of the ‘illegal’ movement of money. According to the report, the alleged fraud had put Adedeji under pressure with stakeholders calling for forensic audit of the Fund’s account. But in his reaction via telephone, Adedeji dismissed the said report…
