Mr Olufemi Olarewaju, NUP Lagos chairman, made this known through Mr Abdulmalik Abiodun, chairman of the union’s Badagry zone. Olarewaju said the strike was also intended to compel the government to increase pensions and settle outstanding liabilities owed retirees. He said President Bola Tinubu recently approved N758 billion for pension increases for federal pensioners, which was paid in…

BY OWEI LAKEMFA THERE were the beautiful political party dresses, worn with pride as their wearers danced in the streets displaying fantastic dance steps. I wondered where these textiles were made. In Nigeria? If so, ‘kundus’ (kudos) to the procurers. What I do not wonder about is who paid. Doubtlessly, not the mass of those clad in them; hungry people cannot afford to buy and sew fabrics just to dance in the streets and attend political rallies. Their wretched state is obvious in viral videos in which those of them being given one-kilogram sachets of rice were being told that…

BY LANRE OGUNDIPE EVERY change at the top of Nigeria’s civil service carries significance far beyond the ceremony of handing over files and exchanging official courtesies. President Bola Tinubu has appointed Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, effective August 27, succeeding Didi Esther Walson Jack on her retirement. The appointment deserves attention for a reason larger than the identity of the man taking over. Nigeria needs to know what the new Head of Service intends to do with an institution that has become indispensable to the running of the country and, at…

BY IDUH ONAH ALTHOUGH this column ordinarily appears every Wednesday, I have found myself compelled by both reason and sentiment to either bring it forward or muster sufficient mental energy to publish twice for the week. I chose the latter because some occasions, especially birthdays, simply refuse to wait for editorial routines. Today is one of them. It marks the 66th birthday anniversary of Comrade John Ejoha Odah, a man I have known long enough to understand that celebrating him is about far more than acknowledging another year added to his age. It is about recognising a life that has…

By Max Amuchie IT BEGAN, unexpectedly, with a telephone call one evening in May. I was at my desk in Abuja when my phone rang. On the other end was Kemi Yusufu, Publicity Secretary of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP). She had an unusual message. A friend had contacted her to say that the Chinese Embassy in Abuja was looking for a way to reach me. Kemi had done what friends sometimes do when opportunity comes knocking in an unfamiliar voice: she passed on my contact. The following morning, a message arrived from the Chinese Embassy. I was…

NIGERIAN politics is so serious that it is no longer left in the hands of politicians. Or so it seems. We can see how Davido, carrying the South and a segment of Northern youths, and Rarara, with a huge fan base in the North, stand at the vanguard of the music industry, with their influence now extending into national politics, where their reach can shape public loyalties and political momentum. Davido and Rarara are Nigerian musicians and household names in the Nigerian music industry. Each has his own genre, audience, style and appeal, shaped by his background. Rarara, who did…
