THE MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has reiterated that his major political priority remains securing the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. The minister also dismissed allegations that the cross-party Rainbow Coalition, which he is associated with, was established to destabilise existing political parties. Wike said his…

BY LANRE OGUNDIPE THERE is something strangely familiar about Nigeria’s repeated attempts to reform the machinery of government. A committee is established, an exhaustive report is produced, agencies are identified for merger or abolition, government announces implementation, and for a while the country is treated to the language of restructuring. Then the machinery settles back into its old rhythm. The question this time is whether anything fundamental is actually changing. The distinction matters. Civil service reform is not simply the reduction, merger or relocation of government agencies. It is about changing the way the state works. It is about clarifying…

BY OWEI LAKEMFA A COUNTRY’s Ministry of Education is supposed to be a place of illumination with clear ideas about the future. Nigeria has had not just super educators like Professors Wole Soyinka, Ebi Alagoa, Alvan Ikoku and Adamu Baikie, but also outstanding Education Ministers like Abudu Yusufu Eke and Babs Fafunwa. The ongoing conflagration over the award of King’s College, KC, Lagos, to a group of its Old Boys again exposes the current leadership of the Education Ministry under Dr Tunji Maruf Alausa as retarded. Before analysing the KC issue, permit me to address this issue of incompetence in…

By Max Amuchie THERE is something almost deceptively ordinary about a notebook. It is paper. A surface for writing. It may sit on a desk, in a drawer, beside a bed or, under less ordinary circumstances, in a prison cell. Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks are one of the great reminders that the physical circumstances in which an idea begins do not determine the distance it can travel. Written during his imprisonment between 1929 and 1935, they entered the intellectual archive of the 20th century. The lesson is not that every notebook becomes the Prison Notebooks. It is simpler than that.…

This journey, or the Fourth Republic, has outlasted the first three, and we are now in the eighth cycle of campaigns, manifesto presentations, and promises. These are the preludes to the elections. Contestants will come to us wearing various faces – religious, tribal, ethnic, regional, and even that of empathy. While those faces are mostly not shown publicly, what we mostly hear from them are promises of what would enhance our lives and well-being. Corruption is the main cause…
